The Isle of Wight College won three of the categories presented at the 2019 Isle of Wight Education Awards on Tuesday 16th July, namely:

  • Leading Light – Pat Suttmann, International
  • Strong Foundations – Lindsay Davies, Travel & Tourism
  • Unleashing Potential – Katy Edmunds, Performing Arts

I am immensely proud of Pat, Lindsay and Katy for winning these awards and am delighted that our students benefit from having such enthusiastic, dedicated and motivational tutors and support managers here at the college.

Debbie Lavin CBE, College Principal

The Isle of Wight Education Awards, run by the local authority, celebrate the highest calibre of teaching and support staff across the island. Nominations were invited from all types of education providers, covering early years, primary, secondary and post-16. The college submitted one nomination for each of the 8 categories, of which 5 were shortlisted for the final and 3 were Award winners.

Leading Light

Pat Suttmann, who recently won over €750,000 EU funding for the college, is passionate about sharing knowledge and best practice. During the past year, in addition to many EU countries, the college has hosted educational visits from Belarus, Ghana, India, Thailand and South Africa, and college students have enjoyed visits to many countries including Cyprus, Lithuania, Norway and Spain.

Pat was nominated for the award by Paul Buckland, Head of Enrichment, Enterprise & Schools, who commented:

Pat works tirelessly to create new opportunities for students and staff on an international platform. Her bid writing skills and negotiations with the British Council and other European funders have enabled positive, life changing travel experiences for hundreds of students at the college.

Paul Buckland, Head of Enrichment, Enterprise & Schools

Currently Pat is working with Age UK on the innovative WeTomorrow Project, an international collaboration between six European educational partners, creating virtual tools for people with dementia, in order to improve their memory skills and quality of life.

Strong Foundations

Paul Buckland, who also nominated Lindsay, added:

Lindsay is passionate about ensuring the Travel & Tourism curriculum is exciting, relevant and current. Her students love being in class; lessons are varied, interesting and pacey, with an emphasis on having fun.

Paul Buckland, Head of Enrichment, Enterprise & Schools

Using her extensive knowledge of global tourism, Lindsay encourages students to experience new adventures and develop strong customer service skills. To achieve this, last year her students enjoyed a two-week work experience in Barcelona.

Lindsay also works closely with industry employers, both on the island and mainland, to ensure that college leavers have the skills they need to launch their careers in the tough but rewarding world of travel and tourism.

Unleashing Potential

Katy was nominated by Arlene Cooper, Head of Academic Studies:

Katy’s generosity of time and encouragement has benefited many young people, unleashing their potential in areas they did not know they could succeed. By carefully assessing each student’s capabilities and passions, Katy finds innovative ways to develop their performance skills, whilst instilling in them the resilience to be self-critical and constantly improve.

Arlene Cooper, Head of Academic Studies

In addition to numerous projects throughout the year, under Katy’s expert supervision the Performing Arts students recently staged a successful production of RENT at Strings Bar & Venue in Newport.
