The Isle of Wight College celebrated the achievements of its learners with an awards ceremony to recognise the outstanding achievements of 120 of its further education learners plus the graduation of 40 learners from Foundation Degree and HND programmes run by universities of Chichester, Portsmouth and Southampton.

In front of distinguished guests including Mary Case, High Sherriff and Ian Ward, Leader of IW Council and over 700 family members and friends the learners were presented with certificates or trophies by Debbie Lavin, Principal.

Guest speaker Mr Anthony Roberts, OBE, MA, BSc, BM, BCh, FRCS, FRCSG reminded the audience of the importance of a good C.V. and interview skills in today’s competitive job market and that if you have worked hard and earned a qualification then you should let people know about it. He congratulated the learners and wished them continued success.

Mr John Flemming, President of Shanklin Rotary Club presented Rotary sponsored awards to Cheyenne Green 1st year, Hayley Cromwell  2nd year and Shona O’Hanlon 3rd year hairdressing students. Zoe Stroud from Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce presented Business Student of the Year Shield to Samantha Henton.

Peter Conway Chair of Governors presented special awards to:

  • Elise Ruth (16) from Shanklin won the award for 14-16 Year Old Student of the Year for her commitment to learning on the Introduction to Hair and Beauty course.
  • James Martin (29) from Cowes already had a degree in Business and I.T. when he decided on a career change and enrolled on the college’s Chichester University Foundation Degree in Graphic Design. He was named Graphic Design Student of the Year.
  • Richard Brimson (18) from Newport received the Judith Salmon Award for excellence in Art and Design.
  • Plumbing Student of the Year was Brandon Alexander (17) from Thorness Bay.
  • Painting and Decorating Student of the Year was Luke Woodford (25) from Newport
  • The Stuart Dyer Cup – Award for Excellence in Catering was awarded to Henry Bull (18) from Cowes.

The most coveted trophy, that for overall college Student of The Year went to Daniel Thompson (20) from Chillerton as he has spent several years at college and has shown fantastic improvement and progression during this time. He started in 2007 as a school-link motor vehicle student. Upon leaving school in 2009 he joined the Entry to Employment foundation course and progressed to Level 1 Motor Vehicle in 2010. This gave him entry to the Level 2 programme in 2011 and then Level 3 in 2012.

Across this time Daniel also worked on his English and Maths and improved from entry level to full GCSE. Now that Daniel has completed the Level 3 Motor Vehicle course he is off to Swansea Metropolitan University in the Autumn to study Motor Sport Engineering. Daniel said ‘I feel really honoured to win this award and I have to say I did find it much easier to learn at college but I hadn’t really considered university until our Careers Adviser suggested it. I attended one of the university open days then I realised the fantastic opportunities that are out there. I am really interested in the technical side of motor racing, the analytics and tactics. After university I hope to work for NAS Cars in the USA.’

This is a very special day and it gives me the greatest pleasure to see so many young people achieving at the highest levels.

Debbie Lavin, Principal
