Learners on the Insights course organised and managed an Employer Speed Dating event.
The event was attended by over 80 students and 8 island employers and training providers: Medina Food Services, Pizza Express, What’s Your Dream, The Falcon (Ryde), Tesco, Southern Water, Isle of Wight College Apprenticeships and Linda Stone from The Isle of Wight College itself.
Three learners, Jack Jasper, Piers Joyner and Bobby Beddingham said “It took us 8 weeks to organise this event. College students sat down to chat rather informally with the employers, but were only allowed to do so for 5 minutes at a time before an alarm sounded and everyone had to change seats.”
It’s close to a real world experience. Young people are not being formally interviewed, but they get the same experience
The funding for the event came from the Isle of Wight Council. Commissioning Manager for 14-19 in Education and Skills, Andrew Briggs, said that the money came as part of a grant for The Isle of Wight College, St George’s School and St Catherine’s School. Mr Briggs said “The main message of the event was to make all young people aware of employment opportunities on the island. The event provided a taster of what it’s like to have a job interview, but without any of the stress.”
It’s been a big success. Piers, Bobby and Jack put in such a huge amount of effort. There was a real buzz. We’ll definitely do it again, and in a bigger venue next time
