Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

WHAT WILL THE INTERVIEW INVOLVE?

All students called for interview will be given an overview of the area by a senior member of the land team, normally with the Curriculum Manager. When this is completed all parents and students are welcome to ask questions to gain a better understanding of their course and life at the Isle of Wight College.

Students are individually called for a 15 minute interview to enable staff and student to make an informed choice as to the suitability of the course and College life for them.

All students will be informed at interview whether they are able to join their preferred course though some conditions are likely to ensure the required entry standard is reached before joining the course. This ensures all students are challenged and capable of completing their qualification to a good standard and to help them have a wider range of choices when they join the world of employment.

Please bring a pen with you to the interview and a school report/record of achievement with you (for school leavers).

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

Those people who enjoy practical outdoor work and have already had some experience or interest in working in the Land Based Industries. Some work experience in horticulture will be beneficial.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will complete numerous units in this one-year course, such as:

  • Establish and Maintain Plants Outdoors
  • Participate in Propagation Techniques
  • Participate in Protected Horticultural Plant Production

HOW WILL I LEARN?

You will learn by completing practical projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations.  The course will cover basic knowledge and important practical skills.  You will also spend at least one day each week on work experience.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?

The Level 2 Diploma is the equivalent to 4 GCSEs grade A*-C.  Level 2 Diplomas can develop the skills you need to start or progress a career in:

Garden centres, nurseries, amenity horticulture, landscape construction, garden design, turf culture, tree surgery, garden maintenance.

This course also provide good progression for Level 2 Diploma Horticulture or Level 3 Diploma or Certificate in Horticulture. To achieve this you must gain a minimum of overall Merit grade to enter to level 3 with a Distinction grade in the Intro to Biology unit and gain a C grade in GCSE English.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES

Visits to local and mainland venues such as Kew Gardens or the Royal Horticultural Society gardens at Wisley.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Work experience in realistic work placements, for example local parks, garden centres, landscapers and garden maintenance businesses.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

You must be up to date with Tetanus protection.

Study Programmes

All Study Programmes for 16-19 year olds at The Isle of Wight College are designed to include:

  • Work experience which is effective, relevant, and includes careers fairs, site visits, guest speakers and introduces you to the expectations of the real demands of work
  • Extended work experience/industry placement for Level 2 learners Over the course of your Level 2 study programme you may be expected to do between 36 – 415 hours of industry placement depending on the course you have chosen. All learners are expected, and encouraged, to do their best to find their own relevant, purposeful work experience which supports their career progression.
  • English and maths, where students have not yet achieved a GCSE grade A* - C (9 - 4 using the new grades) in these subjects by age 16
  • Non-qualification activity, such as tutorials and work-related learning, to help further develop the personal skills relevant to your progression goals
  • A vocational experience which will form the substantial part of the programme

These four elements of the programme should combine to provide stretch and challenge for you helping to prepare you for progression to employment or further study.
