Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

If you know you want a career in the music industry then Platform One College of Music is the ideal place to study.

Platform One is an independent organisation that works in partnership with the Isle of Wight College and the University of Chichester in order to provide high quality music and music technology provision at all levels. All music courses are based in Platform One’s own dedicated premises which is a 5 minute walk from the Isle of Wight College. Platform One facilities include two professional recording studios, specialist music technology facilities, fully equipped rehearsal rooms, lecture rooms, and specialist instrumental rooms.

Endorsement deals with Blackstar, Marshall Amplification, Ashdown Engineering, Pearl Drums, Peavey International, Audient and Zildjian ensure that industry standard, quality equipment is available to all students studying with Platform One.

Students studying at Platform One have all of the benefits of accessing the facilities offered by the Isle of Wight College. This includes student services, student welfare, careers advice, Learning Resource Centre, IT facilities and additional courses, where appropriate.

The Level 2 Programme of Study includes a BTEC First Diploma in Music, music technology and instrumental development. This is a brand new Level 2 qualification, which is equivalent to studying six GCSEs.

The course is designed as a one-year stand-alone music course for students who have not yet formally studied music. It is essential that applicants already play a musical instrument or sing to a basic level.

Students successfully completing this level 2 qualification with a merit/distinction grade profile would be eligible to apply for the Level 3 programme also offered at Platform One.

The course is structured and delivered in units as described below:

  • Planning and Creating a Music Project
  • Exploring the Music Profession
  • Exploring Musical Composition
  • Rehearsal Techniques for Musicians
  • Understanding Music
  • Developing as a Musical Performer
