Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.


Interview and 5 GCSEs grade 4 (C) or above in written subjects which must include English. Unless Maths grade 4 (C) has already been achieved before the Course, then those who haven’t achieved this grade will study GCSE Maths alongside the Childcare Course.

Learners will need 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or above.

Alternatively, the Full Diploma in Childcare and Education Level 2 at an overall grade 4 (C) or above would be required.


This is an advanced level course. Achievement at grade “A*” attracts 420 UCAS points (equivalent to 3 A levels) and direct entry to University.


This course is for those with a genuine interest in children and a desire to be involved with their care, development and education.


College classes provide the knowledge and understanding to build confidence and make the best of the very extensive work placements with children aged between Birth -5 years.

Units of work studied in the first year are:

  • Child development from conception to seven years
  • Children’s health and well-being
  • Providing safe environments for children
  • Child health
  • Play and learning
  • Understanding children’s additional needs
  • Observation, assessment and planning
  • External assessment: Effective Practice Study Task

Units of work studied in the second year are:

  • Supporting emergent literacy
  • Supporting emergent mathematics
  • Preparing for school readiness
  • International perspectives
  • Reflective practice for professional development
  • Professional partnerships in early years
  • Professional Practice Portfolio
  • Extended Assessment Task (5,000 word externally marked assignment in second year).

Students should expect to spend a considerable amount of the course in real working environments. These include placements in settings such as Early Years Centres, day nurseries, baby units, preschools, primary schools.

It is essential that Childcare and Education Workers have a genuine interest in children. It is an advantage to be patient, reliable, flexible, cheerful, and enthusiastic and in addition have a sense of humour! Candidates should be able to use their own initiative with a commitment to equal opportunities.

  • Practical tasks

Study will be split between two – three days at a work placement, which will vary throughout the Course, and two and a half days at College. Students are encouraged to work independently using The Learning Zone for independent study and an online study site. A few personal books will be essential for studying.

Students will be assessed by assignments throughout their Course.

Candidates work experience will also be continuously monitored and assessed.


As part of your programme of study you may be expected to attend an external work placement for 50 working days each year.
This will give you occupationally specific training focussed on developing practical and technical skills in the workplace.


Study Programmes

All Study Programmes for 16-19 year olds at The Isle of Wight College are designed to include:

  • Work experience which is effective, relevant, and includes careers fairs, site visits, guest speakers and introduces you to the expectations of the real demands of work
  • Extended work experience/industry placement for Level 3 learners Over the course of your Level 3 study programme you may be expected to do between 36 – 415 hours of industry placement depending on the course you have chosen. All learners are expected, and encouraged, to do their best to find their own relevant, purposeful work experience which supports their career progression.
  • English and maths, where students have not yet achieved a GCSE grade A* - C (9 - 4 using the new grades) in these subjects by age 16
  • Non-qualification activity, such as tutorials and work-related learning, to help further develop the personal skills relevant to your progression goals
  • A vocational experience which will form the substantial part of the programme

These four elements of the programme should combine to provide stretch and challenge for you helping to prepare you for progression to employment or further study.
