Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

WHAT WILL THE INTERVIEW INVOLVE?

The interview process will involve Maths and English assessment along with an informal discussion with one of the team members, the whole process should take no longer than three hours.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

This course is designed to prepare people for work in a particular discipline or construction occupation.  It has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions.

Candidates have the option of training in either Bench Joinery or Site Carpentry.

Each route comprises:

  • Core units
  • Occupation-specific units
  • Practical task marked to industrial standard

Each unit comprises of practical tasks and knowledge tasks.

To gain the award the student must be successful in all units and the phase test; they must also pass an independent health and safety test and two separate knowledge tests.

Candidates working in the industry as a carpenter/joiner have the opportunity to collect the requisite evidence of industrial experience to achieve the relevant NVQ.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will study 5 units :

  • Continuous assessment in practical activities
  • Continuous assessment in trade knowledge
  • English or maths
  • Knowledge examination (core knowledge)
  • Knowledge examination (trade specific knowledge)
  • Online examinations
  • Health & Safety Exam

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

You will study English & Maths Function Skills within this course.

ENHANCEMENT

The Dipolma in Carpentry or Joinery, as a full time course, will be completed alongside Functional Skills.  These will provide you with essential skills and knowledge in a range of craft areas and enable you to relate to other construction crafts people.

Work Experience

Work placements and any work experience are highly desirable but subject to availability.  All candidates are expected, and encouraged, to do their best to gain purposeful work experience during their course.  We will do all we can to assist in finding suitable opportunities.

The timetable is designed to give all candidates the opportunity to complete at least 36 hours of work experience within the academic week.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Work placements and any work experience are highly desirable but subject to availability.  All candidates are expected, and encouraged, to do their best to gain purposeful work experience during their course.  We will do all we can to assist in finding suitable opportunities.  The timetable is designed to give all candidates the opportunity to complete at least 40 hours of work experience within the academic week.

EXTRA ACTIVITIES

The College can offer a variety of additional qualifications and activities beyond the core course requirements.  All students are invited to complete additional qualifications.

HOW WILL I LEARN?

Typically attendance will be for two and a half days per week. Key Skills are assessed through examination and portfolio production.  Generally there is a practical and academic assessment for each unit. The course is structured and delivered by continuous assessment.  It will be your responsibility to update your record book which will show evidence of your experience and achievements.

You must complete all the occupational units, practical assessments, knowledge assessments, phase tests, knowledge tests and the Health and Safety test in order to obtain the full qualification.

Evidence of performing a range of tasks in the workplace is also required to achieve the NVQ.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?

  • Apply problem solving techniques in the areas of competence covered
  • Understand the principles of construction in each unit
  • Develop practical skills as required by the industry
  • Progress to Advanced Technical qualification
  • NVQ 3 Carpentry and Joinery if there is adequate work based evidence to support assessment

Note:

Progression to the Advanced Technical qualification is by the satisfactory completion of the Diploma Level 2 together with a reasonable report from your Tutor along with a good attendance record.

Progression to the National Vocational Qualification –  Level 3; is by the satisfactory completion of the National Vocational Qualification – Level 2 together with a reasonable report from your Tutor along with a good attendance record.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Essential Materials, Books and Equipment needed

You will be expected to provide yourself with:

  • Safety footwear incorporating steel toecaps (£30 approx.)
  • Bib and brace / overalls as protective clothing ( two pairs ) (£25 approx.)
  • Tape Measure ( 5 metre minimum length) (£8 approx.)
  • An approved set of Drawing Equipment (£35 approx.)
  • Calculator, Writing Materials, A4 Lever Arch Files, Paper (£15 approx.)
  • Recommended Books (£24 approx.)
  • Health and Safety Test New Registrations (£35 approx. included in exam fee)

PLEASE NOTE FEES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

It is expected that all students will enter for the examination.

Study Programmes

All Study Programmes for 16-19 year olds at The Isle of Wight College are designed to include:

  • Work experience which is effective, relevant, and includes careers fairs, site visits, guest speakers and introduces you to the expectations of the real demands of work
  • Extended work experience/industry placement for Level 2 learners Over the course of your Level 2 study programme you may be expected to do between 36 – 415 hours of industry placement depending on the course you have chosen. All learners are expected, and encouraged, to do their best to find their own relevant, purposeful work experience which supports their career progression.
  • English and maths, where students have not yet achieved a GCSE grade A* - C (9 - 4 using the new grades) in these subjects by age 16
  • Non-qualification activity, such as tutorials and work-related learning, to help further develop the personal skills relevant to your progression goals
  • A vocational experience which will form the substantial part of the programme

These four elements of the programme should combine to provide stretch and challenge for you helping to prepare you for progression to employment or further study.
