Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

What Is This Course?

The BTEC Certificate in Business Level 2 is a one-year full time course. It covers a selection of carefully chosen business units (see table on the next page for mandatory and proposed optional units to be delivered). This qualification develops and accredits knowledge and skills needed to work in a business administration role. It also provides learners with a range of business and administrative skills such as collating and reporting data, organising business travel and accommodation and archiving information.

Who is the course for?

This course provides valuable opportunities for individuals to develop skills and gain underpinning knowledge and understanding in business and administration, which will support entry into the business and administration workplace. It is suitable for working across a wide variety of sectors including NHS trusts, educational institutions, government departments, charities and the private sector.

This course is a full time option and is suitable for students 16 years or above.

What will I learn?

The course is designed for students who wish to develop a good knowledge of Business skills; in addition students will learn the fundamentals of business so that they are able to apply their knowledge when running a company.

English & Maths

The Isle of Wight College is fully committed to developing and improving the skills of young people. This includes ensuring that learners work towards improving their English and mathematics. These skills are essential competencies for progression within further education, higher education and employment.

Therefore, all students not currently holding a GCSE English & maths at grade 4 to 9 (equivalent to C to A) will be required to attend English and maths GCSE or Functional Skills (depending on your prior qualifications) as a part of the programme of study.

How will I learn?

The course is delivered by specialist staff, who possess industry and business experience along with specialist qualifications. Teaching sessions incorporate a mixture of activities and on-line learning to ensure students develop skills and knowledge.

Students are assessed via methods as listed above and participation in a cross-department project. This helps students to develop core skills required for business which include the ability to meet deadlines and retention of knowledge as well as application of skills.

Progression

The qualification is designed for entry and progression within employment, or an apprenticeship. In addition to this, successful completion of the BTEC Certificate in Business Level 2 can lead to entry to the BTEC Level 3 – 90 Credit Diploma in Business/Extended Diploma in Business courses.

WILL I GET REAL INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE?

An ability to work in the real world is essential. Employers want staff with qualifications and experience. If you want to run your own business you need to know what it is like. Therefore the course sets out to offer a variety of work experience opportunities these include; guest speakers, real business assignment briefs and external work experience within an organisation, which will be outside of your regular college timetable and current employment (if you are already employed).

Study Programmes

All Study Programmes for 16-19 year olds at The Isle of Wight College are designed to include:

  • Work experience which is effective, relevant, and includes careers fairs, site visits, guest speakers and introduces you to the expectations of the real demands of work
  • Extended work experience/industry placement for Level 2 learners Over the course of your Level 2 study programme you may be expected to do between 36 – 415 hours of industry placement depending on the course you have chosen. All learners are expected, and encouraged, to do their best to find their own relevant, purposeful work experience which supports their career progression.
  • English and maths, where students have not yet achieved a GCSE grade A* - C (9 - 4 using the new grades) in these subjects by age 16
  • Non-qualification activity, such as tutorials and work-related learning, to help further develop the personal skills relevant to your progression goals
  • A vocational experience which will form the substantial part of the programme

These four elements of the programme should combine to provide stretch and challenge for you helping to prepare you for progression to employment or further study.
