ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

It is anticipated that you have already studied at level 3 and in addition have the following:

  • Level 2 Literacy or GCSE in English at C Grade
  • Secure knowledge of using word processing packages
  • Current working knowledge of an organisation within a line management post
  • 3 hours per week outside of class in which to complete research and assignment work

As the course is designed to develop managers, you will need to be working as a line manager to a group of employees/staff.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

The Award in Management and Leadership is one of a series of progressive management qualifications designed by the Chartered Management Institute and can provide opportunities for progression to other qualifications at the same or higher levels, which could also be work-based or more academically structured.

The courses are aimed at supervisors and first line managers, to support the development of their skills in maintaining and developing the effectiveness and efficiency of the operations for which they are responsible for, by motivating and developing the people who work in the team or department; fostering effective communications and developing a sense of team/corporate identity.

This course is a part of the suite of professional qualifications that are run, accredited and assessed by The Chartered Management Institute (CMI). 

Course frequency

These courses of approximately eight weeks duration (some units may be ten weeks, you will be informed of the duration at interview) and are usually run on three different occasions throughout the academic year. 

Course DELIVERY

Lessons are held at The Isle of Wight College, Newport. All classes are tutor led; the unit is assessed by the successful completion of one word-processed assignment, which is marked by The CMI. The CMI is an awarding body in their own right.

Times and days are typically 17:00- 19:30 on Tuesdays (dates exclude the College closures / half terms) all these arrangements are subject to confirmation. Candidates will also need to set aside at least 3 hours per week (outside of class) in which to complete research and assignment work.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The Level 5 Award in Management and Leadership is an introduction to managerial style and aims to provide you with knowledge, understanding and application of management style, managerial effectiveness and efficiency.

To achieve a Chartered Management Institute Award in Management and Leadership (QCF), you need to successfully complete a CMI module. The choice of module will be from the following list and upon application, you will be told which unit will be running at the next course.

HOW WILL I LEARN?

The course explores how successful organisations make best use of information and knowledge – the key resource in business, and provides a compelling rationale for organisations to use appropriate systems, and for individuals to acquire the skills to manage and use the systems.  The course encourages active student participation and concentrates on the practical application of management principles in the context of the developing first-line manager.

Whilst students will study management theories, the work will be put into the context of their own work places or ‘as real’ scenarios.  In addition, students will be expected to bring their own examples of practice to the course in order to ensure that the course is as practical based as possible.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

To undertake this course you will become a registered student member of the Chartered Management Instituted. This registration will be done on your behalf by the Isle of Wight College.
