Entry Requirements

The Isle of Wight College has standard entry requirements for full-time college courses, depending on the level of the course to be studied.

There may be additional entry requirements for a small number of specialist courses. If this course is one of these specialist courses, additional entry requirements will be stated below.

WHAT IS THIS COURSE?

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business (year 2) is the progression qualification which follows on from the one year Pearson BTEC Level 3 90 credit Diploma in Business (year 1).

Students studying on the Pearson BTEC Level 3 90 credit Diploma in Business (year 1) may have the option to progress to the Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business.

Please be aware that students must have successfully passed all units from year 1 and have an attendance of 88% or higher, good interpersonal skills, the ability to work with others, a commitment to, or an interest, in a career in the Business sector or Higher Education.

WHO IS THE PROGRAMME FOR?

This is an advanced level programme designed to provide students with a base of study in the business sector and who aim to progress to higher education, and ultimately employment in the business sector.

This course is a full time option and is suitable for students 16 years or above that have already achieved the Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Business (year 1).

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The course is designed for students who wish to develop a good knowledge of Business skills; in addition students will learn the fundamentals of business so that they are able to apply their knowledge when running a company.

ENGLISH and MATHS

The Isle of Wight College is fully committed to developing and improving the skills of young people. This includes ensuring that learners work towards improving their English and mathematics. These skills are essential competencies for progression within further education, higher education and employment.

HOW WILL I LEARN?

The course is delivered by specialist staff, who possess industry and business experience along with specialist qualifications. Teaching sessions incorporate a mixture of activities and on-line learning to ensure students develop skills and knowledge.

Students are assessed via methods as listed above and participation in a cross-department project. This helps students to develop core skills required for business which include the ability to meet deadlines and retention of knowledge as well as application of skills.

PROGRESSION

Upon successful completion of The Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business and subject to suitable grade, offers for progression within education system or into employment and it is suitable for those who have decided that they wish to study in detail or work in a particular area of work.

HIGHER EDUCATION and UNIVERSITY

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business is broadly equivalent to three GCE ‘A’ Levels and you can gain UCAS points (please see the UCAS tariff points chart below) depending on your final grade.

This means you could further your studies via an HND in Business here at The Isle of Wight College or at a university or you could gain entry directly on to a university degree course (depending on gaining sufficient UCAS points).

WILL I GET REAL INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE?

An ability to work in the real world is essential. Employers want staff with qualifications and experience. If you want to run your own business you need to know what it is like. Therefore the course sets out to offer a variety of work experience opportunities these include; guest speakers, real business assignment briefs and external work experience within an organisation, which will be outside of your regular college timetable and current employment (if you are already employed).

If it is your intension to study on the 2 year Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Business for funding reasons you will be enrolled directly on to this course.

Study Programmes

All Study Programmes for 16-19 year olds at The Isle of Wight College are designed to include:

  • Work experience which is effective, relevant, and includes careers fairs, site visits, guest speakers and introduces you to the expectations of the real demands of work
  • Extended work experience/industry placement for Level 3 learners Over the course of your Level 3 study programme you may be expected to do between 36 – 415 hours of industry placement depending on the course you have chosen. All learners are expected, and encouraged, to do their best to find their own relevant, purposeful work experience which supports their career progression.
  • English and maths, where students have not yet achieved a GCSE grade A* - C (9 - 4 using the new grades) in these subjects by age 16
  • Non-qualification activity, such as tutorials and work-related learning, to help further develop the personal skills relevant to your progression goals
  • A vocational experience which will form the substantial part of the programme

These four elements of the programme should combine to provide stretch and challenge for you helping to prepare you for progression to employment or further study.
