Entry Requirements

All applicants MUST provide evidence of the following before starting their Access to HE studies:

  • GCSE Maths at grade C or above
  • OR GCSE English / GCSE English Language at grade C or above
  • OR GCSE grade ‘C’ equivalents in English and Maths (E.g. Appropriate Scottish Standard grade qualifications)
  • OR IELTS at band 6.5 or above (For non-native speakers of English)
  • GCSE Science at grade ‘C’ or above.
  • Should you not have two GCSEs in either maths or English then you may subject to an entry test and approval by the College be offered a place on condition that you take the GCSE in maths/English along with the course
  • You must be able to present certificates or Statements of Results at interview, unless you are taking your GCSEs this summer.

BTEC learners may be able to take other GCSEs.

PROGRESSION

This course provides the equivalent of 3 A Levels worth up to 166 UCAS points. You will study practical Science including optional Units. This will give you a very recognised qualification in Science allowing access to a wide variety of employment sectors and a wide variety of courses in higher education. Most universities accept BTEC qualifications for example the entry requirements for a Degree in Physiotherapy at Brighton University; Radiography at Bradford University; Speech Therapy at Manchester University; Adult Nursing at Bournemouth University; Environmental Science at Bournemouth and a wide range of other university courses.

Employers also value the BTEC Diploma for a variety of related careers for example Science Technician, Veterinary Nursing etc…

There are a fascinating range of practical techniques and experiences to complete. Assessment is mainly by practical work and report writing. The course is marked to allow Pass, Merit and Distinction grades and these are widely understood by universities and employers. For many professions and employment sectors the skills acquired during the course are highly valued. Links to industry and visits are encouraged.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

All Units are assessed through a variety of laboratory reports and assessed tasks. Some tasks will be practical and others written. A variety of assessment methods can be used including presentations, a variety of ICT media including publisher and video. Each Unit has equal weighting. Completion of the first year is worth 50% of the available marks for the full Extended Diploma. In year two again nine Units are taken which includes seven optional Units.

The emphasis for assessment is placed on the quality of reports written and the ability to develop interest and research skills in scientific content. Students will be encouraged to complete reports using a variety of College resources and study facilities.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

In Year 1 you will be introduced to the amazing world of practical Science where workplace related and technical techniques are introduced. How can bacteria from 40000 year ago be found in Antarctic ice? How is it that our bodies contain millions of bacteria? You will be trained in the use of a variety of scientific instruments and techniques including DNA profiling and analysis of water samples. In addition the course will focus on other key techniques used in industry such as chromatography and the purification and extraction of compounds. Students will get to test water samples and use electronic monitoring equipment.

By the end of the 1st year students will have developed an awareness of many aspects of working in science such as laboratory design, storing of scientific data and health and safety issues regarding the handling of chemicals and biological material. Year 1 and includes an extended investigation planned and developed by the student. This can be based here in the College laboratory or it may be possible to arrange a work related placement to complete the project in a vocational setting. Other Units include statistics and optional Units to complete the Diploma.  Year 2 builds on the work completed in Year 1 with a range of exiting and varied subjects including clinical psychology and biotechnology.

WHAT ARE THE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES?

This course will provide knowledge and skills desirable for many degree level courses such as, biological sciences, paramedical courses, nursing, physiotherapy, materials science, ICT, forensic science, chemical technologies and engineering.

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science is also a valid qualification for a variety of employments sectors including working as a science technician, systems engineer, horticulture, service sector and teaching and education.

If you wish to progress to university you will usually need at least a Grade C pass in GCSE English and Grade C in mathematics.

HOW MUCH WILL THE COURSE COST?

Students will need to purchase a scientific calculator and a clear 30cm ruler. There will also be some optional trips during the course of the year, and possibly work placements for students may be asked to contribute to the travel costs. Lab coats will be provided.

Study Programmes

All Study Programmes for 16-19 year olds at The Isle of Wight College are designed to include:

  • Work experience which is effective, relevant, and includes careers fairs, site visits, guest speakers and introduces you to the expectations of the real demands of work
  • Extended work experience/industry placement for Level 3 learners Over the course of your Level 3 study programme you may be expected to do between 36 – 415 hours of industry placement depending on the course you have chosen. All learners are expected, and encouraged, to do their best to find their own relevant, purposeful work experience which supports their career progression.
  • English and maths, where students have not yet achieved a GCSE grade A* - C (9 - 4 using the new grades) in these subjects by age 16
  • Non-qualification activity, such as tutorials and work-related learning, to help further develop the personal skills relevant to your progression goals
  • A vocational experience which will form the substantial part of the programme

These four elements of the programme should combine to provide stretch and challenge for you helping to prepare you for progression to employment or further study.
