- Watersports Instructor Training (WIT) qualification at UKSA or an equivalent Dinghy Instructor course
- One full season’s experience as a watersports instructor

Students yet to obtain a GCSE in Maths and English (grade 9-4) will be required to attend study sessions at The Isle of Wight College.
Commitment to English and Mathematics
English and Mathematic skills are essential to education and employment prospects. UKSA is committed to supporting levels of English and Mathematic development throughout programmes. Where necessary, English and Maths sessions will be included in the study program as a compulsory element. These sessions are in addition to the contextualised English and Maths that is embedded into every vocational program at UKSA.
This intensive programme develops and progresses candidates in the next stages of their watersports careers; after the completion of a WIT (water sports instructor training) programme. The programme is designed to provide direct employment into the water sports industry. Students work towards instructor advancements and industry endorsements.
Type of Qualifications*
Candidates will be working towards the successful completion of a Level Certificate in Sport (Outdoor Pathways). The awarding body for this qualification is NCFE. NCFE is a national Awarding Organisation, passionate about designing, developing and certificating diverse, nationally recognised qualifications. The units within the qualification follow the QCF (Qualification and Credit Framework). The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) introduces a standard currency for learner achievement across the qualifications system and different awarding bodies through the awarding of credit values.
In addition to the Level 3 certificate candidates will be working towards the various industry elements. Endorsements and qualifications are provided by RYA (Royal Yacht Association), BSUPA (British Stand-Up Paddle Board Association) accreditation. The following elements will also form part of the programme;
- Safety Boat
- Power Boat Instructor
- SUP ‘Ready to Race’**
- SUP ‘Ready to Tour’**
- Keel Boat Endorsement
- Multihull Endorsement
- Dinghy Advancement
- Windsurf Advancement
- Knowledge towards Day Skipper Theory***
* Only 1 assessment per programme included following successful completion of practical period. Additional retake assessments will be at the cost, time and responsibly of the candidate. You are not guaranteed to gain these qualifications during your studies.

Additional Support and Guidance
During the programme careers and employment advice will be provided through industry guidance sessions. These will assist with the development of job searches, the recruitment process, Curriculum Vitae development and covering letters. Candidates will also have access to the UKSA online job service to assist further with employment upon graduation.
At UKSA we understand the importance of work experience in order to effectively succeed in an employed role. A number of weeks will be dedicated to work experience at different sites and environments to broaden understanding, experiences whilst providing networking opportunities.
Study programmes consist of Maths and English sessions** 1-2 days a week followed by 3 days a week practical, theory and/or work experience.
All Study Programmes for 16-19 year olds at The Isle of Wight College are designed to include:
- Work experience which is effective, relevant, and includes careers fairs, site visits, guest speakers and introduces you to the expectations of the real demands of work
- Extended work experience/industry placement for Level 3 learners Over the course of your Level 3 study programme you may be expected to do between 36 – 415 hours of industry placement depending on the course you have chosen. All learners are expected, and encouraged, to do their best to find their own relevant, purposeful work experience which supports their career progression.
- English and maths, where students have not yet achieved a GCSE grade A* - C (9 - 4 using the new grades) in these subjects by age 16
- Non-qualification activity, such as tutorials and work-related learning, to help further develop the personal skills relevant to your progression goals
- A vocational experience which will form the substantial part of the programme
These four elements of the programme should combine to provide stretch and challenge for you helping to prepare you for progression to employment or further study.
