Everyone living on the Isle of Wight over the age of 16 should download the app if they have a smartphone. The more people who use it, the more successful it will be and the sooner we will be able to try and get life back to normal.

A large-scale contact tracing and testing programme will play a central role in managing the rate of COVID-19 transmission.

The first stage of this programme involves the launch of a new NHS COVID-19 app. A controlled release of the app will take place on the Isle of Wight from Tuesday 5th May, with the app being available to NHS health and social care staff, and council staff. It will begin being made available to Isle of Wight residents between Thursday 7th May – Monday 11th May, before being rolled out nationwide a few weeks later.

All 80,000 households on the island will receive access to the official NHS COVID-19 contact tracing app, which will let people know quickly if they’ve come into contact with someone who has reported symptoms of coronavirus. It will also provide advice on the right action to take and how to access a swab test, to stop the virus spreading further.

The launch of the NHS COVID-19 app is critical in stopping the spread of the infection and easing the pressure on our NHS and symbolises our route out of the national lockdown.

Once someone installs the app, it will start logging the distance between their phone and other phones nearby that also have the app installed using Bluetooth Low Energy (so it won’t drain your battery).

The privacy and security of app users’ data has been a priority for NHSX app developers. The development of the NHS COVID-19 has had the support of National Cyber Security Centre experts, which has been advising on best practice throughout.

By downloading and using the NHS COVID-19 app, Isle of Wight residents have the opportunity to lead the way for the UK, stop to the spread of infection and help protect their loved ones and the NHS.

Please play your part in the UK’s fight against coronavirus by visiting www.covid19.nhs.uk on your smartphone to install the app and start using it today.
