Here at Isle of Wight College we work with a number of employers, in a vast array of industries. A fantastic opportunity has arisen to work for Tropical Engineering as an Apprentice Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer.

This is a unique opportunity for an Apprentice Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer to join Tropical Engineering, undertaking an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Engineering, or an Advanced Apprenticeship option for anyone who has already completed a level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship.

Tropical Engineering are specialists in manufacturing high quality carbon fibre and composite products. Based in Cowes Isle of Wight, Tropical Engineering can cater to your every need, whether it be from an existing design or from our in house concept design and engineering, you can count on Tropical Engineering’s many years of experience and professional working methods to deliver you the highest quality products.

The role is working as part of a team at Tropical Engineering, manufacturing, assembling and fitting a wide range of parts using a range of materials including metals and composites.

The successful candidate will undertake a wide range of tasks including:

·         Assembling complex manufactured parts

·         Producing complex composites parts (mainly pre-preg)

·         Supporting engineers

·         Keeping the workshop tidy

·         Using tools

Apprenticeship Framework

A full Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship to include:

Diploma in Composites Engineering
Functional Skills in maths, English and ICT
An Advanced Apprenticeship is an option for anyone who has already completed a level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship

Qualifications Required   

GCSE grade C/4 or above in Maths and English, or an equivalent qualification is essential for this position

Working Week

·         Approximately 37 hours per week

·         Normally starting at 08:30 and finishing at 17:30 with 1 hour lunch. Finish at 13:00 on Fridays

·         One day weekly attendance at Cecamm from September 2019

·         There is a requirement to complete 20% off the job training, College attendance will contribute but time spent either learning something new, other courses or any support work that is not in your usual role will also be counted

Weekly Wage

·         £4.00 per hour to start

Apprentices are also entitled to a discounted bus pass to support with travel costs. This role is based in an engineering workshop in Cowes and you will be required to make your way to and from work independently. 

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.90 per hour. This applies to 16-18-year-old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training. For more information visit: www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates

Once qualified, there may be an opportunity to progress to a permanent role within the business, dependent on suitability and opportunity at that time.

There is a chance of travel outside of the UK in this position. If the successful applicant is into sailing there will be an opportunity to get involved in helping commission sail boats that they work through the parent company Diverse Yachts.
