Here at The Isle of Wight College we work with a number of employers, in a vast array of industries. A fantastic opportunity has arisen to work for Isle of Wight Accountants Ltd as an Apprentice Bookkeeper and Trainee Accountant.

This is a unique opportunity for a passionate individual looking to start or grow their accountancy career.

Bases in East Cowes, Isle of Wight Accountants are looking for a motivated and ambitious Bookkeeper/ Trainee Accountant to join their fast-paced, growing accounting firm.

This is an exciting opportunity to earn, gain experience and begin your career in accountancy, whilst working towards a nationally recognised accountancy qualification.

The business will provide valuable hands on experience by offering ‘on the job’ training where the successful candidate will be working alongside experienced finance professionals.

 You will be undertaking and learning a variety of general bookkeeping and accounting duties, as well as contributing to securing client relationships.

Apprentice Role and Responsibilities:


  • Study towards obtaining a Level 2 AAT Apprenticeship qualification
  • Perform bookkeeping tasks such as data entry, accounts payable and accounts receivable maintenance and bank account reconciliations
  • Assist with preparation of management accounts and similar reports
  • Assist with preparation of accounts and working papers


 Person Specification and Essential Skills:

 The successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. You must be motivated to learn and demonstrate a clear interest and aptitude in beginning a career in accountancy.

You must also be adaptable with the ability to prioritise work and meet both academic and business requirements.

 Qualifications Required

GCSE grade C/4 or above in English & Maths (or equivalent qualification and/or ability to work towards these Functional Skills) 

Apprenticeship Framework

  • Level 2 Accounting Apprenticeship
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English if required
  • There is a requirement to complete 20% off the job training, this includes time spent either learning something new, other courses or any support work that is not in your usual role  
  • The successful apprentice will attend the college one day a week as part of the course 

Working Week

  • Monday to Friday
  • 30 hours a week


Minimum Apprentice Wage (Negotiable for the right candidate)


The closing date for applications will be 20th September 2019 where shortlisted candidates will be interviewed initially by the accounting tutor to confirm eligibility and then interviewed by the employer.

*The successful apprentice will also be entitled to a discounted Southern Vectis bus pass, if required.

Apprenticeship duration will be around 12 – 18 months.

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.90 per hour. This applies to 16-18-year-old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training. For more information visit:

Once qualified and following on from the apprentice role, for the right candidate there will be opportunity to progress to AAT Level 3 and full time future employment, depending on suitability and need.
